Counting Coppers; and, a Gift

Consider this a mid-day bonus post. Being the weekday worker bee that I am, I don’t always get the chance to do posts in the middle of a Wednesday, but here we are. Poetic Asides prompted for poems that have something to do with a box, and not one to pass up the serendipitous timing of a prompt + a break at work, I wound together an ovillejo real fast. More in-depth stuff to follow this evening, if I get a seat at my local cafe and have the time to type merrily away.

Also, Swoon Bildos sent me an email not long ago asking if it would be all right to do a videopoem of my piece “Odds and Ends” that was up at Qarrtsiluni back in October, as a short film piece for his late father. It’s now been put together and can be seen here; I rather like it, and I’m very flattered that the piece had an impact, which was interpreted further in a new medium. (Dave Bonta liked it enough to share it, too!) That, to me, is a unique and interesting gift. (Considering that “Odds and Ends” was the spore of the idea that mutated into Curio, the poem has significance for me too.)

In the Northern Hemisphere, at least, today is the shortest day. Make the most of it.

Counting Coppers

We pay pennies to see what’s hid:
no lid
on this bony puzzle box. Speak,
to pique
our curiosity. The wide
inside
tempts us. Secrets, we can’t abide.
A Lincoln’s head to open yours,
vend those dreams– as we’ve found no doors,
no lid to peek inside.

Gorgeous rendering of your poem, Joseph! Happy solstice!

  2. Yousei Hime says:

I went and watched (and listened) to “Odds and Ends.” It was stunning. I loved it even more than when I first read it. Congratulations and best of the holidays to you and yours.

  3. Deb and Yousei: isn’t it beautiful? I love when people take something and honor it, while at the same time making it their own unique and fantastic thing. I’m glad to have been a part of that process.
